Vessel carrying 13 people hits reef, sinks near Hon Chuoi island

A fishing boat struck an underwater reef and sank off Hon Chuoi island; all 13 crew members were rescued by border guards and local fishermen.

On the morning of 24/12, fishing vessel CM-91404-TS, captained by Nguyen Van Bien and engaged in seine netting, struck an underwater reef. The vessel began taking on water and subsequently sank. The incident occurred approximately 5 nautical miles (over 9 km) southeast of Hon Chuoi island.

Upon receiving the distress call, Hon Chuoi Border Post deployed its officers and soldiers in a specialized canoe. They also mobilized two fishing boats operating nearby to assist in the rescue operation.

By approximately 14:30, rescue teams reached the site of the sunken vessel. All 13 crew members were safely transferred to other vessels without any injuries.

The incident resulted in estimated damages of about 2 billion VND. Border guards are now working with fishermen to tow the damaged vessel to port for salvage and repairs.
