Series of intersections in Hanoi have sidewalks narrowed, road surfaces widened

Numerous intersections along routes such as Pham Hung, Minh Khai, and Co Linh are undergoing traffic reorganization, involving sidewalk narrowing and road resurfacing to enhance traffic flow.

On Minh Khai street, near the Vinh Tuy bridge underpass and Mac Thi Buoi street, the Traffic Infrastructure Maintenance Board, Department of Construction, has repaired damaged road surfaces and reduced the size of the roundabout to widen the road, improving vehicle flow.

Hanoi is currently upgrading its infrastructure, narrowing sidewalks, cutting trees, and reorganizing traffic at 12 intersections to alleviate congestion.

Co Linh street, located in Long Bien and Thach Ban wards, is being renovated and expanded from three to five lanes in each direction. This route directly connects to Vinh Tuy bridge and frequently receives a large volume of vehicles from the Hanoi - Hai Phong expressway, leading to congestion during peak hours.

At the Co Linh - Thach Ban intersection, the median strip and sidewalks have been adjusted and narrowed to create more space for vehicle circulation.

Just over one km away, the Chu Huy Man - Nguyen Lam intersection has also been recently modified, with sidewalks and road surfaces widened. Additionally, an extra right-turn lane has been added for vehicles turning from Chu Huy Man street into Nguyen Lam street, heading towards Huynh Van Nghe.

Following these adjustments, local traffic has improved, particularly because the right-turning traffic is now separated, reducing pressure and limiting congestion at the intersection.

Also on Minh Khai street, the U-turn point in front of Hoa Binh 7 alley has been closed. Instead, the median strip was narrowed and expanded to create a new U-turn point on the section from 117 Minh Khai alley to Hoa Binh 4 alley.

Before this adjustment, vehicles from Hoa Binh 7 alley heading towards Vinh Tuy frequently conflicted with traffic flowing towards Giai Phong, causing traffic hazards and congestion due to vehicles having to swerve.

On Pham Hung street, the intersection with Dinh Thon street has been closed. Authorities simultaneously opened the median strip near the Me Tri - Pham Hung - Duong Dinh Nghe intersection, creating a U-turn point for vehicles in both directions.

Driver Nguyen Khac Binh stated that since the traffic reorganization, congestion during peak hours in this area has significantly decreased, as vehicles from Dinh Thon no longer cut across the Pham Hung axis as before.

To alleviate traffic pressure at the Vu Quynh - Me Tri intersection, a section of the 25 m wide median strip in front of the Vietnam National Academy of Music has been removed, creating a U-turn point for vehicles.

The area around the Academy of Music experiences high student traffic. Previously, vehicles from Duong Dinh Nghe wishing to enter the Academy had to make a U-turn and wait for the traffic light at the Vu Quynh - Me Tri intersection, often causing prolonged congestion during peak hours. Opening the U-turn point in front of the Academy allows vehicles to cross the road before the intersection, reducing the number of cars waiting for red lights, thereby helping to limit congestion.

On Huynh Thuc Khang street, authorities are widening the road, particularly at the right turn towards Nguyen Chi Thanh. The sidewalk is awaiting paving, while the road surface is pending asphalt application.

Before the expansion, vehicles on Huynh Thuc Khang street waiting at red lights caused long queues, preventing vehicles wishing to turn right onto Nguyen Chi Thanh from moving smoothly.

The Le Van Luong - Hoang Minh Giam - Nguyen Tuan intersection is also undergoing road widening construction to reduce traffic congestion, especially during peak hours.

In addition to mobilizing machinery, dozens of trees at this intersection are also being relocated to make way for traffic.

Approximately 500 m away, the intersection between Nguy Nhu Kon Tum and Vu Trong Phung streets is being adjusted and widened. Workers are repaving sidewalks and applying asphalt to the road surface in the intersection area.

Due to its proximity to a school, this intersection experiences high vehicle density and frequent backups during peak hours. Cao Thanh Van, a parent, expressed hope that congestion will improve once the adjustments and repairs are complete.

About 25 km from central Hanoi, the intersection of Vo Van Kiet road with the entrance to Quang Minh Industrial Park is also undergoing traffic reorganization. Authorities will open an additional median strip narrowing point at the Vo Van Kiet - Quang Minh Industrial Park entrance intersection to facilitate turning vehicles, while simultaneously closing the median strip opening near the Me Linh Plaza entrance.

Furthermore, this intersection will have additional traffic lights installed to enhance regulation, ensure safety, and reduce congestion.

Hanoi initiated the program of narrowing sidewalks and median strips to widen roads in 2015. Many routes have been improved using this method, including Khuat Duy Tien, Pham Hung, Tran Duy Hung, Nguyen Chi Thanh, and Lieu Giai - Kim Ma.
