Camping and catching the sunrise on Da Lat's pink grass hill

Many tourists visit Masara hill, setting up camp the previous afternoon to await the pink grass and cloud hunting at sunrise, with peak numbers towards the end of the year due to cool, dry weather.

Mr. Phu advises visitors to choose areas with less grass for setting up camp. Da Lat's early morning and nighttime temperatures typically range from 12-15 degrees C, so visitors should bring warm clothing.

Masara hill is located in Masara hamlet, Ta Nang commune, nearly 80 km from central Da Lat. It borders Lam Dong and the former Binh Thuan province, marking where the Lam Vien plateau begins its descent. The road to Masara is challenging, yet visitors are rewarded with a cool, tranquil atmosphere.

This vast grassland transforms into a pink hue under the morning sun, a scene captured on 10/12 by photographer Van Phu, 35 years old, a Da Lat resident. Unlike other areas, Masara lacks pine forest cover, allowing the vibrant pink grass to dominate the expansive landscape. Some patches of grass appear darker, almost sunburnt from direct sunlight exposure.

The photo shows a corner of Masara pink grass hill, contrasting with the blue sky, clouds, and surrounding pine forest.

The pink grass season typically lasts until the end of december, though its duration can vary by specific location, ending earlier or later.

Pink grass, a type of wild grass, belongs to the needle-leaf group. It grows in small clumps with slender stems and delicate leaves.

According to Mr. Phu, while Da Lat features several areas with pink grass, Masara hill consistently draws many visitors due to its extensive area, wild scenery, and uniformly beautiful grass coverage.

Travel from central Da Lat to Masara hill takes over hai hours. Many visitors choose to camp on the hill the previous afternoon, aiming to capture stunning sunrise and cloud photos the following morning.

Camping activities on Masara hill are generally self-organized, with no formal tourist services available. Visitors should proactively prepare tents and possess camping skills, paying particular attention to tent placement to avoid strong winds. Nighttime temperatures often drop low and may be accompanied by rain. As the area is far from residential zones, it is advisable for visitors to travel in large groups and secure their personal belongings.

The ideal time to observe the pink grass and engage in cloud hunting is between 5-6 a.m., when the morning dew creates a captivating "snow grass" effect. While motorbikes and oto can reach the hilltop, many prefer to park along the trail and walk into the pine forest for photo opportunities. Visitors can also enjoy the sunrise by the lake nestled amidst the grass hill.

Ms. Le An, a Da Lat resident, considers Masara hill a familiar year-end destination. She describes the experience: "The peaceful, relaxing scenery feels like being completely disconnected from noisy urban life."

Beyond Masara, visitors to Da Lat in december can also explore the fox-tail pink grass hill, characterized by tall stems and large blooms that appear in early winter. The Xuan Tho commune, located 11 km from the city center, currently features widespread blooming grass.
