Erected in 2015, this illuminated model holds the Guinness World Record as the world's largest Santa Claus. It is composed of over 250,000 vibrant LED lights.
The structure's scale is striking, standing as tall as a 7-story building. Measuring approximately 10 meters wide, the model is visible from various points across the city.
Funded by the Agueda City Council with an investment of approximately EUR 49,000, the installation has become a must-see tourist attraction. It is the most photographed spot during the city's Christmas festivities.
The concept for the world's largest Santa Claus stemmed from a desire to distinguish Agueda. This initiative forms part of a broader project to promote local tourism and culture.
"The Santa Claus is more than just an attraction; it symbolizes the creativity and energy Agueda city invests in all its endeavors", stated Mayor Jorge Almeida.
He reiterated that the city government will continue to invest in similar initiatives, aiming to boost local commerce and tourism while strengthening community cohesion.
In addition to the colossal record, visitors to the Agueda Tourism Office can also admire the world's smallest Santa Claus. This nano-sculpture by British artist Willard Wigan fits perfectly within a needle's eye, visible only through a microscope.
The iconic illuminated white umbrellas, a symbol of Agueda city in the Aveiro region, have officially returned to welcome this year's Christmas season.
The city's umbrella street was previously recognized by CNN Travel as one of the world's most beautiful Christmas streets.
