Passengers deplane on request, stranded as airport security closes

A group of passengers found themselves stranded outside a Florida airport after being asked to deplane due to bad weather, only to discover the security checkpoint had closed for the night, preventing their re-entry.

Randi Hipper, 23, was returning home to Tampa, Florida after a business trip in Hong Kong. The initial leg of her journey to Los Angeles was smooth. However, the subsequent flight circled for 30-40 minutes due to a storm near Tampa. The pilot then announced a fuel shortage, necessitating a diversion to Fort Myers airport.

Upon arrival at Fort Myers, the crew asked Hipper and some passengers to deplane to retrieve checked luggage. She and her group exited the security area to the baggage claim, but the remaining passengers stayed on board. The plane was expected to depart later that day, but by then, the airport's security checkpoint had closed for the night. This left Hipper and her group stranded and unable to re-enter to board their flight.

The group of passengers waited for about one hour at the baggage claim. A Delta Airlines employee appeared but could not arrange an alternative flight or transportation for them, despite Tampa being approximately two hours' drive away.

"We were left stranded there, with no hotel or food", Hipper recounted.

The stranded passengers subsequently organized rideshares among themselves. Hipper was fortunate to get a ride with a family, who drove the group to Tampa. Ironically, their luggage remained on the plane and was transported to the final destination without its owners.

A representative for Southwest Florida International Airport stated that all inquiries were the responsibility of Delta Airlines. The airline confirmed that flight 749 from Los Angeles to Tampa was diverted due to a storm, and the aircraft stopped for about 1 hour and 20 minutes to refuel and await further flight instructions. Delta stated that it was aware some passengers intended to remain on the plane, but they might have inadvertently received incorrect information, leading some to misunderstand that they needed to deplane to retrieve luggage.

"We apologize to the passengers who received incorrect information and encourage them to contact us directly for assistance", the airline announced.
