Passengers flying Vietnam Airlines without checked baggage must check in using VNeID or at kiosks

Starting December 1, Vietnam Airlines implements new regulations for passengers without checked baggage, requiring them to check in online or at kiosks.

Vietnam Airlines is implementing new regulations in accordance with Directive 24/CT-TTg of 2025. This change streamlines the check-in process for most travelers. Only passengers with checked baggage and special categories, such as unaccompanied minors, elderly passengers, and those needing assistance, will continue to check in at traditional counters.

Other passengers will complete the entire process, from ticket purchase and check-in to security screening and boarding, using biometric solutions integrated with VNeID or via airport kiosks. A representative from Vietnam Airlines stated that the new regulation aims to enhance operational safety, save time, and improve passenger experience. The airline recommends passengers authenticate their VNeID to level 2 to fully utilize the features and avoid errors during the check-in process.

Specifically, passengers log into the VNeID app using their level 2 identification account. They select "Other Services" and then proceed with "Online Check-in." After agreeing to data sharing, passengers will be redirected to the Vietnam Airlines app to complete check-in and eKYC. At the airport, passengers will use biometrics at the security gate and subsequently at the boarding gate. If check-in is complete but eKYC is not, the system will prompt them to complete it directly on VNeID.

According to airline staff recommendations, passengers should download the Vietnam Airlines or Vietjet apps. When checking in via VNeID, the system will link with the airline's app, allowing for faster check-in connections.

On aviation forums, many passengers expressed concerns about not yet having VNeID level 2 authentication, especially for imminent flights. However, some view this as a positive step for the aviation industry, helping to reduce time, minimize waiting, and increase accuracy through biometric verification. Passengers will also no longer worry about forgetting personal identification, a common reason for missed flights.

Representatives from travel agencies stated they have informed passengers and partners about the airline's new regulations. They added that this regulation helps shorten check-in times and allows for staff to assist first-time users.

In Vietnam, VNeID-based biometric technology is implemented at Noi Bai Airport (Hanoi), Da Nang Airport, Cam Ranh Airport (Khanh Hoa), and Tan Son Nhat Airport (Ho Chi Minh City). This technology replaces the previous requirement of presenting physical documents. Biometric check-in points are located near biometric security screening lanes and at boarding gates.

Previously, on 3/11, Vietnam Airlines announced that passengers would incur fees for carry-on baggage exceeding standard weight or dimensions, starting from 600,000 VND for domestic routes.
