Pork intestine broth coffee creates buzz

A cafe in Sichuan, China, has become a social media sensation with its latte infused with pork intestine broth.

Located in Jiangyou city, Sichuan province, the cafe offers an unusual beverage: a latte blended with pork intestine broth, priced at 32 CNY (approximately 4.5 USD). The drink is served with a side of stewed pork intestines on a skewer, according to *The Cover*.

Cafe owner Zhang Yuchi describes the drink as having three layers of flavor, with the pork intestine taste intensifying with each layer.

"Stewed pork intestines are a popular dish in Jiangyou, and I thought combining it with coffee would be a unique way to showcase our local specialty," Zhang said.

The cafe sources pre-cooked pork intestines from a renowned local restaurant and uses the broth for the coffee. After numerous experiments, they settled on adding 6 grams of broth to each cup. According to Zhang, the resulting drink has a savory-sweet, umami flavor, reminiscent of salty cheese. The pork intestine flavor is present but doesn't overpower the coffee.

Since the drink went viral on social media in early June, the cafe's sales have more than quadrupled, with about 80% of customers coming to try the unique concoction.

"I'm a coffee lover, and when I saw someone recommending this pork intestine broth coffee, I was curious to try it," a female customer from Chengdu, Sichuan province, said.

Another customer from northern China, who rarely eats pork intestines, found the drink "quite good" overall and believes this innovative coffee could gain wider acceptance.

On Chinese social media platforms, the pork intestine coffee has sparked mixed reactions. Some express enthusiasm, calling it an interesting idea and expressing curiosity to try it. Others reject the combination of coffee and pork intestines.

This is not the first time an unusual coffee blend has grabbed attention in China. A cafe in Jiangxi province previously caused a stir by adding fried chili peppers and spicy pepper powder to their lattes. Another cafe in Yunnan province gained notoriety for its coffee mixed with crispy fried insects.
