Vietnamese national arrested for suitcase theft at Thailand airport

A 27-year-old Vietnamese woman was apprehended for stealing a Chinese tourist's suitcase at Suvarnabhumi Airport, which contained a watch valued at approximately 770 million dong.

Thai authorities arrested a 27-year-old Vietnamese woman on 15/9, following a warrant from the Samut Prakan provincial court. She faces charges of night-time theft at Suvarnabhumi Airport. The arrest was announced at a press conference on 16/9, led by Lieutenant General Saksira Phuekam, Director of the Tourist Police Bureau, alongside other officials.

The theft occurred around 8 p.m. on 7/9, when a Chinese tourist reported a missing luxury suitcase from baggage carousel number 15 at Suvarnabhumi Airport. The suitcase contained a watch valued at 200,000 yuan (approximately 770 million dong), along with cash and personal belongings. Surveillance camera footage allowed police to identify the suspect as a Vietnamese woman who had arrived from TP HCM on the same day.

After taking the suitcase, the suspect left the airport by taxi. She moved between several hotels in the Huai Khwang area of Bangkok before settling in Bo Win district, Chonburi province. Police tracked her down on 15/9, arresting her while she was walking near a villa complex in the Sukhumvit area.

The woman admitted to the theft, confessing that she had hidden the suitcase in an apartment in Huai Khwang. Police subsequently searched the location and recovered the suitcase with its contents.

Thai police had previously issued warnings in late 2025 regarding groups of Vietnamese pickpockets operating in popular tourist areas of Bangkok, such as Chinatown. These groups often work together, with some individuals entering the country illegally or using forged documents.
