China fires 21-gun salute to welcome President Trump

China held a grand welcome ceremony at the Great Hall of the People for the US President's state visit.

Beijing extended a grand welcome to US President Donald Trump today, marked by a 21-gun salute and an elaborate ceremony at the Great Hall of the People. The state visit by the American leader comes amidst existing tensions between the world's two largest economies, making the warmth of the reception a notable diplomatic gesture.

President Trump's motorcade arrived at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing around 10h (9h Hanoi time). His delegation included Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, and CEOs of leading American businesses.

Chinese President Tap Can Binh greeted President Trump, with the two leaders shaking hands and introducing officials from both sides. Tap and Trump then stepped onto a platform together as a military band played the national anthems of the two countries. Simultaneously, a 21-gun salute echoed from nearby Thien An Mon Square.

Following the anthems, the two leaders reviewed the honor guard. Students in vibrant costumes waved flags of both nations, cheering "Welcome, welcome" as the Chinese and American leaders passed through the square.

"Wonderful," Trump commented on the reception.

During the ceremony, Tap and Trump frequently touched each other's arms, signaling a friendly relationship despite the underlying geopolitical dynamics.

After the welcome ceremony, the two leaders moved inside the Great Hall of the People for bilateral talks. President Tap initiated the discussion by describing a volatile global situation and a world "at a new crossroads."

He posed a critical question: "The question now is whether China and the United States can overcome the so-called 'Thucydides' trap' and pioneer a new model of relations between major powers." The term refers to the historical tendency for conflict when a rising power threatens the position of an existing power.

"We should be partners, not rivals, achieving success and prosperity together, charting the right path for major nations to coexist peacefully in the new era," the Chinese President added.

In response, President Trump praised the "wonderful relationship" between the two sides, stating he "greatly respects" President Tap and China, and hailing Tap as a "great leader."

The American leader expressed his belief that the two economic superpowers would have a "great future together." He emphasized, "It is an honor to be here with you. It is also an honor to be your friends. The relationship between the United States and China will be better than ever."

The Chinese President and the US President are scheduled to attend a state banquet at the Great Hall of the People tonight. According to the itinerary, Trump will also visit Thien Dan, a world historical heritage site where emperors of the Ming and Thanh dynasties performed rituals to pray for abundant harvests.
