The sight of Merlin parading through Mexico City's streets, clad in a Mexico national football team jersey and socks, garnered millions of views on social media platforms. Fans celebrated the team's victory over South Africa on 12/6.
"We want to see Merlin in the stadium," one person wrote.
"This duck deserves to be a national treasure," another commented.
"This is the best thing about the World Cup so far," a third remarked.

The two-year-old duck, Merlin, was already a local celebrity. It regularly accompanied its owner, Carla Gomez, who sells bottled water and soft drinks from a cart at weekend fairs and downtown events.
Merlin consistently drew excited cheers, affectionate greetings, and requests for photos from passersby.
"We don't want to leave it home alone; we want it by our side. It's our baby," Gomez shared. "It is the youngest, the sole heir to all my possessions, and now everyone's idol."

Rain or shine, Merlin waddles behind Gomez and her son, Cristian, as they visit some of the capital's famous landmarks, including Alameda Central park, the Palace of Fine Arts, and Zocalo square.
Merlin was a gift to Cristian and became an inseparable companion to the boy.
"Merlin was already known for helping sell bottled water," Gomez said, expressing surprise at the pet's sudden fame. "It is always with us. My family never imagined it would create such a sensation. It was completely unexpected."

On 15/6, Gomez and Merlin met with FIFA representatives for promotional photos and videos. The family hopes Merlin will continue to bring good fortune to the host nation. Mexico is co-hosting the World Cup with Canada and the US, marking its third time as a host after 1970 and 1986.
"Mexico, we are always with you," Gomez said. "Merlin is your number one fan."
