Florida deploys police to control students during spring break

Coastal cities in Florida are increasing police patrols and imposing curfews to curb chaotic student gatherings during spring break.

Thousands of american students are flocking to florida this spring break, drawn by its warm weather and famous beaches. While spring break is a time for students to let loose, it often leads to wild parties and security incidents, prompting police to deploy forces.

Panama City Beach is one city striving to improve its image, after incidents like shootings, uncontrolled partying, and sexual assaults during spring break in recent years. This city boasts one of florida's most iconic spring break beaches.

"no twerking! You will be charged with disturbing the peace", a police officer yelled at a group of women dancing in panama city beach.

Emory Gill, 21 years old, who sells jell-o shots on the beach in destin, said that this year police have prohibited visitors from drinking alcohol on the beach or bringing coolers. Authorities have also imposed a curfew from 8 p.m. to prevent large nighttime gatherings on the beach.

Police increased patrols last weekend in the seaside beach area to prevent unruly student behavior. Officials launched the "come get your kids" campaign, urging parents to supervise minors in these areas.

"5 years ago, spring breaks were chaotic. We created this campaign to encourage parents to watch their children when no adults are present", kevin boyle, seaside's community development unit manager, said.

Students are gathering for "beach takeover" events organized via social media in florida. Tommy ford, bay county sheriff, which includes panama city beach, explained that nearby atlanta high schools have coordinated their spring break schedules, causing swarms of teenagers to descend on the city.

This influx, combined with "beach takeover" trends, strains local authorities. Ford warned, "when thousands gather, if one person pulls out a gun, a stampede will happen." Last weekend, many students participated in an unauthorized event in daytona beach, forcing a large police deployment to maintain order. Even with all 222 officers mobilized, they were outnumbered.

Daytona beach officials arrested 75 people on the beach, including 12 for serious crimes and 15 for drug-related offenses. Last week, the city declared a state of emergency after over 100 suspects were arrested for disorderly conduct during spring break.

A group of louisiana state university (lsu) students were asked by police to leave their rented house in miramar beach, florida. The young people were accused of intoxication and throwing liquor bottles from the balcony, leaving the ground covered in glass shards.

Jacenta evans, 27 years old, is experiencing her first florida spring break, as she did not travel or party during college. "i think the police are controlling the situation well, but traffic is terribly congested", she said.

Mounted police requested people at fort lauderdale beach to leave by 5:45 p.m., so workers could collect trash. Within 15 minutes of police intervention, most of the beach was empty.
