The National Fire Agency of Korea issued a nationwide fire mobilization order on 20/3, after receiving reports of a fire at an auto parts factory in the central city of Daejeon around 1:17 p.m. This order is typically issued when a fire's scale exceeds the local authorities' response capabilities.
Over 200 firefighters and 90 specialized equipment units were deployed to the scene, along with helicopter support from the forestry department. By 7:00 p.m., fire officials had extinguished 80% of the blaze.

Approximately 170 people were inside the factory when the fire broke out. At least 55 individuals sustained injuries, with 24 in critical condition and 14 currently missing. Many victims suffered from toxic gas inhalation or injuries from jumping from the building to escape.
"The government will make every effort to control the situation, carry out recovery work, and support the victims," Interior Minister Yun Ho-jung stated.
However, rescue efforts face significant challenges. One of the factory's two buildings was completely destroyed by the blaze, while the other continues to burn. Rescue teams cannot enter due to concerns that the building could collapse at any moment. Additionally, about 200 kg of sodium chemical inside poses an explosion risk if not handled properly.
Officials indicated that they plan to commence search operations after assessing the building's safety and stability.
"Due to the collapse risk, it is very difficult to enter the building and fully extinguish the fire," stated Nam Deuk-woo, chief of the Daedeok fire station in Daejeon. "It will likely take a long time to clear the smoldering debris."

He added that unmanned firefighting robots have been deployed to search the building's first floor.
President Lee Jae-myung ordered authorities to mobilize all available resources to rescue victims and control the blaze. Earlier, Prime Minister Kim Min-seok instructed Daejeon city officials and police to prevent further damage by managing traffic and implementing evacuation measures.
