On 10/10, Erie city police confirmed that a total of nine people had died in the incident, noting that all victims were deceased before officers arrived. There was no exchange of gunfire between police and the suspect; sounds heard by residents, potentially mistaken for gunshots, were likely from stun grenades used by law enforcement.
"I haven't seen anything similar in over 28 years of working," said Police Chief Rick Lorah.
The identity of the suspect and the motive behind the shooting have not been released.
Data from the Gun Violence Archive (GVA), an organization tracking gun violence in the United States, indicates that the nation has experienced at least 19 mass casualty events since the start of the year. These events are defined as incidents resulting in more than four fatalities.
The GVA also reported that the Erie incident is among more than 500 shootings that have occurred in the United States since early January. According to the organization's definition, a shooting is classified as such when it results in at least four casualties, excluding the attacker.
Gun violence has remained a persistent issue in the United States for many years, prompting public calls for the federal government to implement stricter gun control measures. Despite this, the United States Congress has yet to enact such restrictions.
