The Fukui prefecture coast guard in central Japan reported receiving an emergency call around 2:45 on 21/3 regarding a group of eight Vietnamese workers involved in an incident due to large waves while fishing at the breakwater leading to the Mikuni lighthouse. Local officials had previously erected "no entry" signs in the breakwater area.
According to the coast guard, about one hour into their fishing trip, one person fell into the sea. Four others also fell into the water while attempting to rescue them.
One person was subsequently rescued, but one person died and three remain missing. According to Japanese media, the deceased victim is N.D.T., 38 years old, a resident of Osaka prefecture in western Japan.

The Vietnamese Embassy in Japan reported that the rescued individual is injured and receiving hospital care. The embassy has contacted relevant authorities and the Association of Vietnamese People in Fukui prefecture to coordinate necessary citizen protection measures.
Japanese authorities dispatched ships and helicopters to the scene to carry out search and rescue operations. The Vietnamese Embassy has contacted the rescued citizens to provide support, protection, and ensure their legitimate rights and interests.
Japanese authorities are continuing the search for the three missing individuals. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is coordinating with relevant agencies to further promote search and rescue efforts, verify the identities of the victims, and promptly inform their families to carry out post-mortem procedures.
The Vietnamese Embassy in Japan advises citizens working and living in the country not to go to sea during storms, avoid areas with warnings of large waves, strong winds, or dangerous terrain, especially at night, to prevent unfortunate accidents.
