Trump receives jersey from German chancellor, bicycle from French president at G7 summit

President Trump was gifted a jersey by the German chancellor and a bicycle by the French president at the G7 summit.

During a session on the Russia-Ukraine conflict at the G7 summit in France on 16/6, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz presented US President Donald Trump with a jersey from the German national football team. This custom-designed jersey bore the inscription "Trump 47", alluding to him potentially becoming the 47th US President.

President Trump accepted the gift, held it up for photographers, then folded it and placed it on the table.

"Happy belated 80th birthday, Mr. President. After all, we are all on the same team," Merz commented when posting photos of him presenting the jersey to Trump on social media.

This was not the first time Chancellor Merz had offered a gift as a diplomatic gesture to President Trump. Last year, the German chancellor presented the US leader with a golf club and a gold-plated framed copy of the birth certificate of Trump's grandfather, who was born and raised in Germany before immigrating to the US.

The latest gift followed a public exchange of words between the two leaders earlier this year. The German chancellor had stated that the US was "humiliated" by Iran and criticized Washington for initiating a war in the Middle East without any clear strategy.

President Trump then retorted that the German leader "should spend more time ending the Russia-Ukraine conflict", as well as "fixing his troubled country, especially regarding immigration and energy".

French President Emmanuel Macron also presented bicycles to his counterpart Trump and other G7 leaders.

"All seven heads of state will receive a custom-designed bicycle," David Lappartient, president of the International Cycling Union (UCI), stated.

These gifts serve to promote the World Cycling Championships, which will be held next year in the French Alps. Images posted by Lappartient on social media showed white bicycles, each painted with the flag of a G7 nation below the handlebars.

Trump is not known for cycling and once joked that, apart from frequent golf, he rarely exercises.
