Trump unveils 22 billion USD plan to renovate capital's airport

President Trump announces plan to renovate Dulles Airport in Washington, aiming to make it the world's best facility.

U.S. President Donald Trump announced on July 29 a comprehensive plan to renovate Dulles International Airport in Washington, D.C., with an estimated cost of 22 billion USD. Trump declared his ambition to transform the airport, which he noted "was once considered one of the worst airports in the world," into "potentially the best airport."

This extensive renovation is described as "the next step in our ongoing efforts to restore Washington D.C.'s safety and beauty." Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed that United Airlines would contribute to the project's expenses, recognizing Dulles as a critical operational hub for the U.S. carrier.

Dulles International Airport, situated approximately 40 km from Washington, serves as the region's primary international gateway. The airport experienced a record-breaking year in 2025, handling over 29 million passengers.

The airport renovation is part of a broader series of development projects initiated by Trump in the capital. These have included the renovation of the Kennedy Center, where his name was temporarily affixed before a court ordered its removal in June. He also spearheaded a 14 million USD restoration project for the Reflecting Pool adjacent to the Lincoln Memorial.

Additionally, Trump unveiled plans to renovate the East Potomac Golf Links in Washington, which he characterized as "dilapidated and rundown." Further ambitious proposals included demolishing the White House's East Wing to construct a massive ballroom and erecting a large dome across the Potomac River, near Arlington National Cemetery.
