President Donald Trump announced on Truth Social on the evening of 13/3 that US Central Command (CENTCOM) had conducted one of the most powerful airstrikes in Middle East history, completely eliminating all military targets on Kharg Island, which he called "Iran's jewel". Trump emphasized the US possesses the world's most powerful and sophisticated weapons, stating he chose not to destroy the island's oil infrastructure "for good reasons". However, he warned that if Iran or any other entity impedes the free and safe passage of vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, he would immediately reconsider this decision.

Kharg Island, a small landmass just 6 km long and 20 km2 in area, is strategically located in the Persian Gulf, approximately 25 km off the Iranian coast and over 480 km from the Strait of Hormuz. For over half a century, it has served as Iran's largest oil export hub. The facilities on Kharg have a processing capacity of 7 million barrels of oil per day, handling about 90% of Iran's crude oil exports, primarily destined for Asia, especially China. Given Iran's significant economic reliance on energy exports, Kharg is considered a vital link in its economy.

US and Israeli officials have previously exercised caution regarding decisions concerning Kharg Island. US media reported that the Trump administration had considered seizing this strategic island amidst the ongoing Middle East conflict. Experts have warned that attacks on Kharg Island would disrupt the majority of Iran's crude oil exports, potentially leading to fierce retaliation in the Strait of Hormuz or against regional energy infrastructure.
Iranian officials have not yet commented on the information.
