Vietnam - Cambodia to study cross-border economic zone development

Prime Minister Le Minh Hung held talks with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, agreeing that both sides would study the development of special economic zones and cross-border economic zones.

During talks this morning in Hanoi, Prime Minister Le Minh Hung and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet agreed to research the establishment of special economic zones and cross-border economic zones between their two nations. The discussions also focused on enhancing connectivity and fostering broader cooperation across various sectors.

Prime Minister Le Minh Hung noted that Prime Minister Hun Manet's official visit to Vietnam and participation in the ASEAN Future Forum (AFF) significantly contributed to solidifying political trust and deepening the traditional friendship between Vietnam and Cambodia. He emphasized that the visit also bolstered solidarity, cooperation, and connectivity within ASEAN.

Both leaders reached consensus on several initiatives aimed at improving infrastructure and border connectivity. They committed to advancing the Ho Chi Minh City/Moc Bai - Bavet/Phnom Penh expressway project and exploring the expansion of flight routes linking Vietnam with Cambodia, and Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia.

Prime Minister Hun Manet supported Prime Minister Le Minh Hung's proposals for facilitating investment in areas where both countries possess strengths and needs. These sectors include agricultural product processing, aquaculture, clean energy, construction materials, and logistics.

The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to consistently strengthening political trust and close security and defense cooperation. They reiterated the principle that neither country would allow hostile forces to use its territory to undermine or threaten the security and interests of the other. Furthermore, they pledged to enhance economic connectivity and boost cooperation in culture, education, and tourism.

The Cambodian Prime Minister also proposed expanding cooperation in education and training to improve human resource quality. He suggested intensifying efforts to promote and educate about the long-standing, good neighborly relations between the two countries.

Vietnam and Cambodia will increase coordination in regional and international forums, particularly within the frameworks of Mekong sub-regional cooperation, ASEAN, and the United Nations. They will also maintain exchanges and consultations on strategic issues of mutual concern.

The two nations will work with other ASEAN members to consolidate solidarity and resilience, promote the peaceful resolution of differences, and expand cooperative relations with partners while ensuring ASEAN's central role.

Following their discussions, the two Prime Ministers witnessed the signing ceremony for the Plan of Cooperation in the Information Sector for the period 2026-2030. This agreement was signed between Vietnam's Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and Cambodia's Ministry of Information.
