Vietnamese citizen detained by Israel while participating in flotilla to Gaza

The Vietnamese Embassy in Israel announced that Tieu Nguyen Bao Ngoc was detained by Israeli authorities while participating in a flotilla to the Gaza Strip, and measures for citizen protection are being implemented.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated today that it has coordinated with Vietnamese representative agencies in Israel, Egypt, Turkey, and relevant domestic authorities to verify the detention of Tieu Nguyen Bao Ngoc. The Vietnamese citizen was participating in a Global Sumud Flotilla vessel heading to the Gaza Strip when Israeli forces detained her.

Authorities have also contacted and exchanged information with Tieu Nguyen Bao Ngoc's family to gather more details, facilitating the verification and citizen protection efforts.

The Vietnamese Embassy in Israel is implementing citizen protection measures for Tieu Nguyen Bao Ngoc. It has requested that Israel ensure humane treatment and fully comply with international regulations and conventions related to citizen protection and human rights.

A representative from the Embassy stated that they continue to coordinate closely with local authorities and monitor the situation to provide necessary support to the Vietnamese citizen involved.

Amid the complex security situation in the Middle East, the Vietnamese Embassy in Israel advises Vietnamese citizens to strictly adhere to the regulations of countries in the region. Citizens should regularly monitor security warnings from governments and Vietnamese representative agencies in the area, while limiting travel to conflict zones or areas with safety risks.

The Global Sumud Flotilla, comprising 38 vessels carrying 319 international activists and journalists, departed from Turkey last week. It intended to cross the Mediterranean Sea to the Gaza Strip to protest Israel's blockade of the territory and draw attention to the humanitarian crisis there.

Global Sumud Flotilla organizers reported that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) surrounded the flotilla in waters approximately 250 nautical miles from Gaza. The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on X that the activists had been transferred to Israeli vessels, accusing them of forming a "provocative fleet".

Israel and Hamas reached a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip in 10/2025, largely ending ground hostilities. Israel has established a "golden boundary", controlling about 53% of Gaza's territory, and continues its naval blockade of the coastal area.
