Chinese President Xi Jinping met with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Pyongyang on 8-9/6 during a state visit aimed at elevating bilateral relations to a "new high." The visit also saw the two leaders jointly plant a fir tree, symbolizing their enduring friendship.
During their discussions, President Xi expressed a desire to further develop the relationship and foster cooperation. He emphasized the need for both nations to enhance exchanges in diplomatic, law enforcement, and military sectors, stating, "Regardless of how the international situation changes, the traditional friendship between China and North Korea will remain steadfast."
In response, Kim Jong-un reiterated his full support for the "One China" principle. Both nations agreed to broaden cooperation across political, economic, and cultural spheres, and enhance strategic exchanges through high-level official visits.

The joint tree planting, held on 9/6 at the Workers' Party of Korea's key political cadre training school, was reported by Xinhua as a symbol of "everlasting friendship that continually grows with time."
Earlier in the visit, President Xi, accompanied by his wife Peng Liyuan, and the North Korean leader's couple, attended a cultural exchange program. KCNA stated the performances highlighted "the value and bond of the DPRK-China friendship." Kim Jong-un also hosted a state banquet for the Chinese leader, where Xi expressed his desire to "continue nurturing friendship." Additionally, on 9/6, Xi visited the China-DPRK Friendship Tower, a monument honoring Chinese soldiers who died in the Korean War.
President Xi declared the bilateral relationship had reached a "new historical starting point" and pledged Beijing's unwavering commitment to safeguarding common interests. This visit marked Xi Jinping's first foreign trip this year and his first to North Korea in 7 years. North Korean media characterized the discussions between the two leaders as "opening a new chapter in bilateral relations."
