"US representatives fully understood Ukraine's fundamental position. The talks were constructive, despite not being easy", Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a video address on the evening of 7 December.
Earlier, Zelensky had a phone call with US Special Envoy for Ukraine Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump's son-in-law.
"We discussed many aspects, delving into key points that could ensure an end to bloodshed and eliminate the threat of a new full-scale Russian attack. Both sides also agreed on next steps and the format for these talks with the US", the Ukrainian President added.
According to him, the two sides also exchanged views on "the risk of Russia failing to fulfill its commitments". He further stated, "Not everything can be discussed over the phone. Therefore, we need to work closely with our team on ideas and proposals".

On the same day, President Trump expressed disappointment with his Ukrainian counterpart for not participating in a plan to end the conflict.
"We have spoken with Russian President Vladimir Putin and the Ukrainian leadership, including President Zelensky. I must say I am somewhat disappointed with President Zelensky because, until a few hours ago, he had not read the peace proposal", Trump told reporters.
The office of the Ukrainian President has not commented on this information.
Russia has declared its readiness for negotiations, accusing Ukraine and the West of hindering peace, while Kyiv and its allies contend that Moscow is stalling and using diplomacy to consolidate its interests.
European leaders support a step-by-step diplomatic process for Ukraine, linked to long-term security guarantees and sustainable military aid. However, the Trump administration focuses on quickly reaching an agreement and demands greater burden-sharing. Diplomats warn that all negotiations are fragile and susceptible to changes in US politics.
The Ukrainian President is scheduled to meet with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in London on 8 December. Pat McFadden, a British cabinet minister, stated on 7 December that Ukraine's security and self-determination would be "central" to the discussions.
"The principle behind the talks will be for Ukraine to decide its own future. This is a truly pivotal moment", he said.
