Michigan State Police (MSP) officers on patrol in Detroit around 7:25 a.m. on 28/8 spotted a stolen Chevrolet Cruze and initiated a pursuit. The driver, later identified as a 27-year-old man, led officers onto I-96 and continued into Livonia.
Livonia police joined the pursuit, equipped with a grappler, a device designed to snare a fleeing vehicle's rear tire. The driver continued to accelerate even after the grappler engaged, which resulted in the Cruze's rear axle being torn off. The driver and two female passengers were apprehended. No injuries were reported.
Grapplers are commonly used by US law enforcement. The device, attached to the front of a police vehicle, deploys a net that ensnares the rear wheel of a fleeing car, bringing it to a controlled stop without collision.
