The Vietnam Register (part of the Construction Ministry) has drafted a new national technical standard proposing a corporate average fuel consumption (CAFC) target of 4.83 liters per 100 km for all passenger cars by 2030. Many automakers believe that few gasoline and diesel vehicles currently available can meet this requirement.
The Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers' Association (VAMA) estimates that 96% of traditional gasoline-powered cars and 14% of current hybrids fall short of the proposed standard. To maintain sales volume and achieve this target within the next 5 years, automakers would need to increase the number of electrified vehicles—including hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), and electric vehicles (EVs)—by approximately 868%, nearly 10 times the current quantity. This is considered practically impossible.
In Vietnam, few gasoline and diesel vehicles achieve a fuel consumption rate of 4.83 liters or less per 100 km, and those that do are primarily HEVs or PHEVs. Fewer than 20 models meet this standard, a small fraction of the overall market. Even the smallest internal combustion engine vehicles, such as A-segment hatchbacks and B-segment sedans, do not meet the proposed target.
The following car models achieve a fuel consumption rate of 4.83 liters/100 km or less in combined driving conditions. The data is provided by the manufacturers and confirmed by the Vietnam Register. Actual fuel consumption may vary based on driving habits and traffic conditions.
