Traffic incident: A truck equipped with a dashcam approached a median opening at the QL1A - Nguyen Van Cu intersection (Vinh Linh commune) on the morning of 19/4. Another truck was already waiting, so the dashcam-equipped truck did not slow down and proceeded straight through.
As it neared the crossing point, a car suddenly darted out from behind the parked truck to cross the road. The short distance left drivers no time to react. The truck collided forcefully with the car; casualties are currently unknown.
Driving skills: Instead of waiting its turn to cross the road behind the truck, the car seized an opening to cut ahead, despite having an obstructed view. This type of reckless lane crossing is common in Vietnam, as some drivers do not queue patiently. The key point in this situation is that the driver had no idea if any vehicles were approaching on the straight road, yet still "blindly" crossed.
Therefore, when navigating median openings at intersections, drivers must proactively reduce speed, observe both sides carefully, and only proceed when they have a clear view of the situation ahead or to the sides. If stopped next to another vehicle with an obstructed view, drivers must patiently wait for that vehicle to move, then re-observe fully before continuing. Do not attempt to overtake or drive parallel if it is not safe.
Vehicles traveling straight should gently brake and reduce speed, ready to handle unexpected situations at intersections, especially when a large vehicle is waiting ahead. Drivers should not maintain high speeds or be complacent; they must carefully observe median openings, maintain a safe distance, and always prepare to brake or steer to avoid collisions.
According to Decree 168 on traffic violation penalties, the act of operating an oto without observing carefully and causing an accident incurs a fine of 20-22 million VND and 10 points off the driver's license.
