Distracted by phone, motorcycle taxi driver hits pedestrian

While carrying a passenger and using a phone, a motorcyclist struck a pedestrian crossing the street.

A traffic incident occurred when a ride-hailing motorcycle taxi driver, carrying a passenger, was looking down at his phone at an intersection. At the same time, a young woman was slowly walking across the street. The motorcycle drove directly into her. The strong impact caused all three individuals to fall onto the road. Fortunately, the driver of a car with a dashcam behind them braked quickly, preventing a chain-reaction accident, and the victims did not sustain severe injuries.

In a similar incident, a man distracted by his phone while riding a motorcycle crashed into the front of a car on 9/7 in Van Xuan, Thai Nguyen. Video: CTV

Driving skills are crucial for road safety. Motorcyclists must not use their phones while driving. If it is necessary to check a map or accept a ride, drivers should pull the vehicle over to the side of the road, stop completely, and then check their phone. While moving, drivers need to concentrate on observing their surroundings, especially in heavy traffic, to detect obstacles, vehicles braking suddenly, or pedestrians crossing the street. Additionally, all vehicles should maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead to allow sufficient reaction time for unexpected incidents.

Decree 168/2024 stipulates legal consequences for distracted driving. Motorcyclists using a phone while participating in traffic will be fined 800,000-1,000,000 VND and have two points deducted from their driver's license. In cases where an accident is caused, the fine will increase to 10-14,000,000 VND, with 10 points deducted from the driver's license.
