Driver makes lightning-fast swerve to avoid pedestrian on highway at night

A car traveling at nearly 120 km/h on a highway suddenly encountered a pedestrian standing in the middle of the road, prompting the driver to brake and swerve to prevent a collision on 3/4.

Video: CTV

The incident occurred on the Hanoi - Hai Phong expressway when a dashcam-equipped vehicle, traveling at about 115 km/h in the left lane, suddenly encountered a person standing in the middle of the road. The driver immediately reduced speed and swerved, narrowly avoiding a collision.

This dangerous situation highlights critical driving skills for nighttime travel on expressways. Drivers should flexibly choose a speed appropriate for their headlight settings. Operating at the maximum speed of 120 km/h with low beams can be risky, as the short light range significantly reduces the reaction distance available for emergency maneuvers. It is advisable to only drive at 120 km/h when high beams are engaged.

When encountering an unexpected obstacle at high speed, drivers must remain calm. The immediate actions should be to release the accelerator and gently apply the brakes to reduce speed controllably. Simultaneously, drivers should quickly check rearview mirrors and adjacent lanes before swerving. Steering should be decisive but smooth, avoiding abrupt jerks of the steering wheel to prevent losing control at high speeds. After clearing the obstacle, drivers should continue to reduce speed, activate hazard lights if needed, and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles. It is crucial to remember that pedestrians are strictly prohibited from entering expressways due to the extremely high risk of accidents.
