On 1/5, a truck from a secondary road collided forcefully with the rear of an SUV traveling straight on the main Ho Chi Minh road in Yen Thuy commune. Both vehicles were speeding through the uncontrolled intersection. The impact caused the SUV to spin and swerve towards the roadside where two students were standing. The two girls quickly ran backward, narrowly avoiding being hit by the car. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, though the extent of property damage remains unclear.
This incident highlights crucial driving skills, especially at intersections. The Ho Chi Minh road is designated as a priority road, while the intersecting route is a secondary road. According to traffic laws, drivers on secondary roads, particularly truck drivers, must reduce speed and yield to vehicles on priority roads. They should only proceed when the intersection is clear.
Beyond legal compliance, drivers must adopt a proactive approach to prevent accidents, rather than solely relying on who is at fault. In this specific case, the car driver recognized the collision risk early and honked continuously but failed to proactively reduce speed. Similarly, the truck driver did not slow down despite hearing the warning horn.
All vehicles approaching an intersection must reduce speed, especially those transitioning from a secondary road to a main road. Trucks, in particular, require a longer braking distance than other vehicles. Therefore, truck drivers must be even more vigilant and proactively reduce their speed when navigating intersections.
