Most americans choose gasoline-powered suvs for off-road adventures

Despite the trend towards vehicle electrification, 80% of respondents state they would opt for an internal combustion engine vehicle for off-roading.

A recent Gauge Index survey, conducted by Hankook Tire, reveals that 64% of respondents expressed a desire to participate in off-road driving trips this year. This represents a significant jump compared to the 34% recorded in 2025.

However, a closer look at the data shows a discrepancy due to differing survey questions between the two years. The 34% figure from 2025 did not measure planned off-road trips but rather reflected the proportion of participants who prioritized "off-road driving skills" as a leisure activity.

Younger drivers show the most enthusiasm for these adventures. This year, 74% of Gen Z (born 1997-2012) and 72% of Millennials (Gen Y, 1981-1996) want to take an off-road trip. Older generations are also ready for summer experiences, with 57% of Gen X (born 1965-1980) and 42% of Baby Boomers (1946-1964) sharing this desire.

The study also identified the vehicle types respondents consider most suitable for these trips. Accordingly, 52% believe suvs are the optimal choice, while 36% lean towards pickup trucks.

The majority still favor internal combustion engines over electric vehicles: 79% prefer a gasoline-powered suv over an electric version, and this figure rises to 87% among pickup truck drivers.

Most off-road enthusiasts prefer mild trips rather than challenging rock-crawling adventures in the Moab region of Utah. Specifically, 45% plan to explore forest trails, while only 17% choose desert exploration.

However, these survey results are indicative only due to the small sample size. Hankook randomly interviewed just 1,000 American drivers aged 18 and older.
