Mural transforms into animation as cars drive past

The artwork "Liberation" creates the illusion of movement when viewed from a passing car traveling at speeds of approximately 56 km/h or more.

A street in Indio, California, received a vibrant addition in late 2025 with the unveiling of "Liberation," a mural by Mexican visual artist Hervey Garcia. Spanning approximately 180 meters, the artwork's appeal lies in its dynamic nature.

Garcia's artwork creates a visual illusion through a rapid succession of static images, appearing to stride, transform, and soar alongside a moving car. This piece is a tribute to the art of motion photography, holding a deeper significance beyond its dynamic structure.

The mural begins with a cowboy on horseback, paying homage to Eadweard Muybridge's "The Horse in Motion," created in 6/1878—the first recorded example of motion picture projection. Garcia's character then transforms into the winged horse Pegasus, and subsequently into a bird. Concurrently, the background transitions from a vibrant yellow to a sunset red, culminating in a starry night sky. "Liberation" is likely the first artwork of this type designed to be experienced from a moving car.

The mural garnered significant attention, prompting questions about potential driver distraction or traffic safety concerns. The artist swiftly addressed these worries, stating, "I designed the motion for safety, requiring cars to travel at least 35 mph (approximately 56 km/h), while the posted speed limit here is 45 mph (72 km/h)." He added, "Furthermore, this animated effect is difficult for the driver to perceive directly with the naked eye; it requires a passenger to record it with a phone. This significantly enhances its safety. I appreciate everyone's attention to safety."

Despite initial concerns, the artist expressed gratitude for the support from local residents and those who experienced the artwork. "I poured my heart and soul into this mural, and the fact that it has been embraced by everyone truly means a lot to me," he shared.
