Running red lights due to countdown timer habit

Many drivers rely solely on countdown timers instead of traffic light colors, leading them to disregard red lights.

The situation in the video below is not uncommon, as many drivers develop a habit of watching the countdown timer rather than the actual color of the traffic light. The SUV in the footage proceeded immediately when the timer showed 01 and 00, seemingly unaware that the timer had stopped counting down, yet the light remained red.

Video: CTV

In my opinion, this issue stems from the impatience of many drivers who rush to move as soon as the countdown finishes. However, it is crucial to understand that the countdown timer serves only as an aid for road users; it carries no legal authority. This means that a timer reaching 00 does not automatically guarantee the light will turn green, even if this is often the case.

In reality, there are instances when a red light reaches 00 but does not change to green. This can occur due to a technical malfunction or when the red light phase has been extended, but the timer has not been updated. While it would be simplest if the light always changed color precisely at 00, it is important to reiterate that the timer remains merely a supplementary tool. The legal validity applies solely to the color displayed by the circular traffic light.

The transition period between light phases is a sensitive moment. Vehicles from the opposing direction might attempt to clear the intersection during the final seconds of a green light, while vehicles on this side impatiently accelerate before their light turns green. When two streams of traffic intersect at high speeds, accidents can easily occur. The impatient actions of a few drivers inadvertently create pressure on the entire line of vehicles behind them.

To effectively address this "impatience," drivers need to adjust their mindset and establish new habits when waiting at a red light. Specifically, they should observe the light's color, not the numbers. Drivers should only move when they see the light turn green. Consider the countdown timer merely a reference tool. Once the light changes to green or the timer reaches 0, take one to two seconds to scan the surrounding area for any vehicles from crossing directions that might still be attempting to clear the intersection, then slowly accelerate. Crucially, remain firm and do not rush to move simply because a nearby vehicle starts to shift or due to honking from behind.

Properly waiting at a red light not only helps avoid fines but, more importantly, reflects a driver's culture, composure, and civility.
