A 40-year-old driver for the Uttar Pradesh state power utility died on the evening of 28/12 after his vehicle was completely crushed by an overturned truck carrying wood chips on the Nainital highway in India.
The incident occurred around 4:45h at one of the highway's busiest intersections. According to police, two vehicles were traveling in the same direction. A Mahindra Bolero SUV was ahead of the truck. As they neared the intersection, the Bolero driver attempted to turn.
Upon seeing the Bolero turning ahead, the truck driver swerved to avoid a collision. The truck then struck the median, overturned, and landed directly on the SUV.
Wood chips from the truck completely buried the Bolero underneath. Unsure of how many occupants were inside the SUV, passersby immediately raised the alarm and notified authorities.
Traffic police, firefighters, and several ambulances quickly arrived at the scene. A crane was used to move the overturned truck and clear the debris.
The trapped Bolero driver was extracted from the mangled vehicle and transported to a hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead. The highway remained blocked for nearly one hour as police cleared the scattered wood debris and restored traffic flow.
The truck driver fled the scene and is currently being sought by police, who are also investigating whether the vehicle was overloaded.
