In Europe's most dedicated electric vehicle (EV) market, Norway, Tesla is facing increasing pressure from Chinese rivals and even established automotive brands. The US electric car manufacturer's dominance has been challenged for some time, but the rate of decline in recent months has accelerated.
According to the latest registration data for January, only 62 Tesla Model Y vehicles were delivered in Norway, accounting for just 2,8% of new car sales. Across its entire product lineup, Tesla sold a total of 83 units, marking an 88% decrease compared to January last year.
Many other electric vehicle models now surpass the Model Y in sales in Norway. Leading the market in January was the Volkswagen ID.3, with 299 units registered, nearly five times more than Tesla.
Here are the top 10 best-selling new cars in Norway for January:
| Model | Sales | Market Share (%) |
| Volkswagen ID.3 | 299 | 13,5 |
| Toyota bZ4X | 184 | 8,3 |
| Toyota Urban Cruiser | 98 | 4,4 |
| Skoda Elroq | 78 | 3,5 |
| Changan Deepal S05 | 75 | 3,4 |
| Volkswagen ID.4 | 69 | 3,1 |
| Tesla Model Y | 62 | 2,8 |
| Mercedes Vito/Viano | 62 | 2,8 |
| Nissan Micra | 58 | 2,6 |
| Hyundai Inster | 57 | 2,6 |
The German brand Volkswagen secured two positions in the top 10, including the first spot with its ID.3 electric vehicle and the sixth position with the ID.4. Toyota also appeared two times, ranking second and third.
The Tesla Model Y even sold fewer units than the Chinese Changan Deepal S05, a product that only entered the Norwegian market in 11/2025.

In the list, only one internal combustion engine model appeared: the Mercedes Vito/Viano, which is a diesel version. This German brand van accounted for 63,27% of all diesel vehicles sold in Norway in January. In total, only 98 diesel cars found buyers last month, despite the country having cut electric vehicle incentives after declaring "mission accomplished" in its transition in 10/2025.
In 12/2025, Norway achieved a new record for electric vehicle sales, with battery electric vehicles (BEV) accounting for approximately 97,6-98% of all new passenger car registrations. This strong growth pushed the full-year 2025 electric vehicle market share to a record 95,9%.
However, concerns arose that the December record might be a temporary stroke of luck, and that removing electric vehicle incentives could lead to a return to average sales levels. Now, with the data released, Norway appears to have avoided that outcome.
In addition to the 98 diesel cars and 29 hybrid vehicles sold, only seven gasoline cars were purchased in a country with nearly six million vehicles on its roads.
