Toyota announced on 30/7 that its global production and sales hit record highs in the first six months of the year, driven by strong demand in markets like North America, Japan, and China. This figure includes sales from its Lexus, Hino, and Daihatsu brands.
Global sales for the world's largest automaker rose 7.4% year-on-year in the first half to over 5.54 million vehicles, boosted by demand for hybrid vehicles, which accounted for about 43% of total global sales during this period.
Toyota's global production increased 5.8% year-on-year to 4.9 million vehicles. In June alone, global sales grew 1.7% to 867,906 vehicles, while production rose 7.4% to 854,565 vehicles. These production and sales figures include the Lexus luxury brand.

In 2021, Toyota achieved record global sales in the first half for the first time, reaching 5.47 million vehicles. However, subsequent sales were negatively impacted by the global semiconductor shortage and production halts due to a series of certification scandals.
In the first half of this year, Toyota's sales in Japan surged 27.4% to 1.05 million vehicles, rebounding from a sharp decline in 2024 following the discovery of falsified safety inspection data.
Overseas sales also increased by 3.6% to a record 4.5 million vehicles, thanks to strong global demand for hybrid cars.
Toyota's sales in the key US market, including the Lexus luxury brand, rose 4.2% to 1.24 million vehicles amid increased last-minute demand due to concerns about potential price hikes from higher tariffs.
In China, where competition with electric vehicle rivals like BYD is intensifying, Toyota's sales grew 6.8% to 837,744 vehicles, aided by government subsidy incentives.
In Vietnam, Toyota sold 29,274 vehicles in the first half, a 31% increase compared to the same period last year. Lexus sales reached 804 vehicles, a 17% increase compared to the first half of last year. A summary of Toyota's sales (all brands) in major markets is as follows:
Market | H1/2025 Sales (million vehicles) | Increase compared to H1/2024 |
Global | 5,54 | 7,4% |
Japan | 1,05 | 27,4% |
US | 1,24 | 4,2% |
China | 0,84 | 6,89% |
Sales figures for some of Toyota's competitors in the first half of 2025 were mixed. While German giant Volkswagen sold 4.41 million vehicles globally, a 1.3% increase year-on-year, Nissan sold 1.61 million, a 5.7% decline. This drop caused Nissan to lose its position as Japan's third-largest automaker to Suzuki, which sold 1.63 million vehicles, a 2.3% decrease. Meanwhile, Honda, Japan's second-largest automaker, saw sales fall 5.1% to 1.78 million vehicles.
