A woman, carrying a child in front, was riding her motorbike parallel to a tanker truck. As they approached an intersection in Tan Trieu, despite the road being open, the motorbike and truck slowly converged. The woman lost her balance after the initial impact, causing the motorbike to fall and both occupants to be thrown onto the road. Tragically, the woman was run over by the truck's rear wheels and died, while the child was unharmed.
Vietnam's roads predominantly feature mixed traffic, where various vehicle types share the same lanes. This often leads to situations where vehicles travel in close proximity, especially at intersections, during turns, or when making U-turns. While straight roads generally pose a lower collision risk if drivers maintain their lanes, turns present a heightened danger. This is due to restricted visibility, the varying sizes of vehicles, and their different speeds, which can cause them to collide.
In such scenarios, motorcyclists must constantly scan both sides and use their rearview mirrors to check for approaching large vehicles, particularly when navigating intersections or making turns. The fundamental rule is to maintain as much distance as possible from larger vehicles.
Conversely, drivers of trucks, container vehicles, and passenger buses should exercise early observation and avoid abrupt, sharp turns. If visibility is compromised, brief, intermittent horn blasts can be used to alert others.
