During the trading session on 28/7, Apple's stock briefly touched 342.8 USD per share, raising the company's market capitalization to 5 trillion USD for the first time in its history. Apple is the second company globally, after Nvidia, to achieve this milestone.
At the close of trading, Apple's stock slightly decreased to 340 USD. However, since the beginning of the year, the stock has still increased by 25%, outperforming many other large-cap companies.
While tech giants such as Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft are expected to spend hundreds of billions of USD this year to expand their artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, Apple has maintained low capital expenditure and utilized cloud computing infrastructure and Google's AI technology.
Last year, Apple's stock did not grow as rapidly as other 1 trillion USD market capitalization businesses, as investors worried the company might miss out on the AI wave and delay the launch of an upgraded Siri assistant. However, market sentiment has recently shifted, with increasing concerns that tech companies with aggressive spending would incur massive debt, facing negative cash flow without commensurate profit prospects. A new Siri version will also be released this autumn alongside new iPhones.
The debate over AI's future also reflects the competition between Apple and Nvidia for the position of the world's most valuable company. AI chipmaker Nvidia became the first company to reach the 5 trillion USD market capitalization milestone in 10/2025. However, its stock has only risen 6% this year.
Meanwhile, Apple's stock has continued to rise significantly despite the company increasing prices on some devices due to a global memory chip shortage. Apple will announce its previous quarter's earnings on 30/7. This will be the last time Tim Cook chairs the meeting as CEO before John Ternus takes over the position from 1/9.
