On 21/9, in New York, General Secretary and President To Lam met with Ambassador Jamieson Greer, US Trade Representative, during his working visit to attend the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly's high-level general debate, according to TTXVN.

Greer assessed that the two negotiating delegations for a reciprocal, fair, and balanced trade agreement have made significant efforts, achieving much progress and are "very close to the final outcome." According to the US Trade Representative, once signed and implemented, this trade agreement will create more opportunities for cooperation between the two countries.

After hearing Greer's update on the negotiation progress and some US economic and trade issues, General Secretary and President To Lam welcomed the positive outcomes achieved by both sides, aiming for an early signing of the agreement. He emphasized that this agreement will establish a stable, long-term framework for Vietnam-US economic, trade, and investment relations.

The General Secretary and President also requested that the US adopt a comprehensive approach to remaining trade issues, including those related to investigations under Section 301 of the US Trade Act of 1974. Section 301 allows the US Trade Representative (USTR) to investigate and respond to foreign trade policies, practices, or acts that the US deems unfair or restrictive to trade.

At the meeting, General Secretary and President To Lam affirmed that Vietnam considers economic, trade, and investment cooperation as one of the most important pillars of its relationship with the US. He expressed his desire for Vietnam and the US to continue promoting substantive bilateral economic, trade, and investment relations that benefit the people of both nations.

He stated that Vietnam has recently increased purchases of US goods to move bilateral trade towards a more balanced direction, while also creating more orders and jobs for businesses and workers in both countries.

Meeting a group of US congressmen on the same day, the General Secretary and President reiterated his request for the two countries to increase cooperation in science and technology, innovation, digital transformation, and high-tech industries.

Vietnam and the US upgraded relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in september 2023. General Secretary and President To Lam affirmed that Vietnam values this relationship framework and hopes to continue developing stable, substantive, effective, and sustainable relations with President Donald Trump's administration.
