Tan Tan's perspective: 'the older the watch, the more cherished it becomes'

At Tan Tan, old watches are always cherished for preserving time and emotions that cannot be measured by money.

Reflecting on 40 years of brand development, Tan Tan's founder expressed emotion at how far his team has come. What pleased him most was that customers who have been with them from the beginning still visit the store when they have a need. Both share the view: the older an item, the more cherished it becomes.

"There are items that, despite aging over the years, people cannot bear to replace because they are no longer accessories but have become a part of their memories. Watches are similar; they tell time and preserve important moments in life," the founder stated.

A few days ago, a customer came to the shop with an old Omega watch, its case scratched and strap loose. He revealed it was a gift from his father upon graduating from high school. His father passed away long ago, yet the young man kept the watch, viewing it as a memento of love and memories that time could not fade.

After hearing the story, the watchmaker quietly disassembled the watch, gently cleaning each screw slot and adjusting the gears. At Tan Tan, such stories are not uncommon. Customers visit not only because their watches are broken but because they need a trustworthy place to preserve their memories.

According to the founder, some people buy watches for their wedding, while others reward themselves after their first promotion. Not a few cases involve buying gifts for recently retired parents. Despite varying reasons, the common thread is that when they wear the timepiece, they carry a life milestone. When maintenance is needed, they do not seek the closest or cheapest place but return to where they originally purchased it, hoping their "spiritual child" will be cherished as it was on the day it was given.

Most customers say, "This watch isn't worth much money, but it holds many memories." Sometimes it is a gift from an ex-partner, an item left over from a distant trip, or a relic of a phase that will never return.

"We do not differentiate between watches worth a few million dong or tens of millions of dong. The watchmaker still diligently cleans the dial, tightens the strap, and adjusts the time, as if maintaining the heartbeat of a memory machine," he said.

The staff believes that the transaction does not end with the sale; a new journey begins then. Some timepieces return after 5, 10, or even 20 years. Many ask for their watches to be checked when the movement runs slow, and while waiting for repairs, they share stories about their lives, children, or reminisce about their first visit. The small shop preserves countless stories, intertwined with time and memories.

After more than 40 years, Tan Tan is both a distributor and an authorized service center in Vietnam for six international brands: Citizen, Movado, Bulova, Lacoste, Coach, Tommy Hilfiger. It is also a place where customers return to care for a part of their memories.

The founder explained that no two watches are alike. Instead, each version carries the scratches or wear marks of its life journey. "When someone keeps a machine for 10, 20 years, it means they have entrusted much more than just time into it," the representative said.

"From day one until now, we have chosen to work with integrity, gentleness, and perseverance. Beyond selling watches, the Tan Tan team also aims to preserve priceless things: memories, emotions, and stories that time cannot erase," the founder added.
