APMO was first held in 1989 with the aim of identifying and nurturing young mathematical talent, while also fostering cooperation among countries in the region. This year marks Vietnam's return to the competition after a 24-year absence, having last participated in 2002.
Vietnam will also host the APMO as the main coordinator for three years, from 2026 to 2028.
According to VIASM, nearly 50 countries and territories are participating, which is approximately 10 more than last year.
