39 teachers correct thousands of student grades due to 'error'

39 teachers at To Hien Thanh high school corrected student grades 1,299 times, explaining it was due to mistaken grade columns and unclear rounding rules.

The Thanh Hoa Department of Education and Training announced its conclusion on 10/3 regarding grade corrections for numerous students at To Hien Thanh high school. Despite 39 teachers being involved in 1,299 instances of grade adjustments, the department concluded that these changes did not affect student academic performance.

From 4/1 to 16/1, the VnEdu management system recorded 1,299 instances of grade entry, deletion, and modification across eight subjects for students in 29 classes. Of these, 566 instances involved increased scores, while the rest were decreases compared to the original data.

During this period, a literature teacher was accused of unilaterally modifying the mid-term and first-semester final exam scores of 126 students in grades 11 and 12 while inputting data into the system. Teachers raised most exam scores by one to three points compared to the actual test results.

The school identified errors across many classes and subjects. Following a review request, teachers performed 519 entries and grade corrections across 19 classes. Among these, 287 instances involved increased scores, with the rest being decreases.

Teachers stated the discrepancies resulted from incorrect column entries, student order errors, or an unclear understanding of rounding rules. For some other cases, the inspection team indicated insufficient grounds to determine the cause. A random comparison of mid-term and first-semester final scores on the VnEdu system with actual student work showed the current data to be consistent.

The Department of Education and Training noted that To Hien Thanh high school had not clearly defined deadlines for grade updates, nor had it adequately disseminated or provided training on these rules. Limited internal inspection and supervision failed to detect and correct errors promptly.
