Holding acceptance letters, students learn of university rejection upon arrival

Upon arriving at Hue University for enrollment, a number of students were surprised to learn they had been rejected due to 'additional criteria', despite having received acceptance letters.

This group of students, all from the University of Foreign Languages at Hue University, arrived for enrollment on 22/8.

One student recounted receiving an acceptance letter and, with family, prepared and paid a deposit for accommodation near the university. However, upon completing procedures, they were informed their application did not meet the additional criteria. The student worried that the initial acceptance notification meant they would not be considered for subsequent preferences. Several other students and parents faced similar situations, questioning the university's admission and review process.

Le Van Tuong Lan, Head of the Training and Student Affairs Board, explained that acceptance letters were issued based on admission results at the time of announcement, drawing data from the Ministry's and Hue University's common systems, as well as information provided by students. He noted that majors with additional criteria were announced in the admission plan, and this information was also included in the acceptance letters. The final review process involves not only virtual filtering on the system but also cross-referencing original documents and evidence when students complete direct enrollment.

This year, the University of Foreign Languages, Hue University, set admission scores from 15 to 27.77/30 for the high school graduation exam method, and from 18 to 28.26 for students using academic transcripts. The additional criteria for both methods required a minimum English exam score of 5-6 or an average academic transcript score in English over three years of 6.5 to 8 or higher.

Hue University will review these cases. If the affected students had registered subsequent preferences for another university within Hue University and meet the conditions, they will be considered according to regulations. Otherwise, the university will propose that the training institution where the students registered their preferences consider their cases. Mr. Lan did not specify the exact number of students affected.

Since 2022, the Ministry of Education and Training has organized a common university admission system. Additionally, universities have their own systems to receive student scores and evidence. After virtual filtering rounds, the Ministry requires universities to review data before announcing the list of admitted students. It is considered rare for students to arrive at a university with an acceptance letter only to learn they have been rejected, as this has not occurred frequently in recent years.

Two weeks prior, also at the University of Foreign Languages, Hue University, a number of students who qualified for admission through academic transcripts and IELTS certificate conversion to foreign language scores were rejected. The reason was that the automatic admission system added IELTS scores rather than converting them. Many students reported being contacted by the university and told to enroll.
