Physics prodigy accepted into world's No. 1 university

Nguyen The Quan, a gold medalist at the 2025 International Physics Olympiad, has been accepted into the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US.

The student stated he received his acceptance letter on 14/3 and is awaiting scholarship results before deciding whether to enroll.

According to the university's announcement, Quan was admitted to the Physics department, specializing in mechanical engineering. MIT's admissions committee described the student as "outstanding" and "one of the most talented and promising students in an extremely competitive applicant pool".

MIT has consistently been ranked the world's No. 1 university by QS for many consecutive years. The institution is renowned for its research and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education. Last year, the acceptance rate was 4,6% from over 29,200 applications.

Quan is an alumnus of Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted in Nghe An province. He previously won gold medals at the 2025 International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) and the 2025 Asian Physics Olympiad, and secured first prize in the national gifted student examination for two consecutive years.

Prior to Quan, several Vietnamese IPhO gold medalists have received scholarships from MIT, including Nguyen Manh Quan (2021) and Vo Hoang Hai (2024).
