Beauty queen sparks debate after calling octopus a 'symbol of women'

Contestant Linh Chi's comparison of an octopus to a symbol of women during the Miss Ocean Vietnam Global 2025 pageant has ignited controversy.

During the top 5 question and answer segment, the contestants were asked: "If you could become a sea creature, which would you choose and why?".

Nguyen Linh Chi began by saying, "Every creature has its own unique value". Due to nerves, she stumbled slightly. After encouragement from the MC, she continued: "If I must choose, I would choose the octopus. The octopus not only stands out with its unique qualities and miraculous camouflage, but also holds special value in maintaining the balance of the marine ecosystem". Composing herself, she concluded: "To me, the octopus is a symbol of the modern woman: intelligent, adaptable, and flexible in an era where society is rapidly evolving. We don't just need a woman with outstanding appearance, but also inner beauty, good character, and a sense of purpose for the community".

The contestant from Thanh Hoa's response generated much discussion on online beauty forums. Many felt that comparing an octopus to a symbol of women was inappropriate. On one forum, user Dinh Nga commented, "Any creature would have been fine, but I don't understand the connection to celebrating women".

According to Chu Tan Van, the copyright holder of the Manhunt Vietnam competition: "The octopus is a creature with a peculiar shape, not aesthetically pleasing, and doesn't evoke feelings of gentleness or nobility – qualities often associated with female beauty. While one could argue that the octopus is intelligent, flexible, and multi-armed like a capable woman managing many things, it's difficult to convince people due to the unfamiliar and potentially misleading image". However, Tan Van acknowledged that young contestants are often spontaneous, and under pressure on stage, unexpected responses are sometimes understandable.

Runner-up Linh Chi explained that she only had a short time to answer the question and was understandably nervous. "I tried to connect the image to convey a positive message to the audience," she said.

Linh Chi admitted to lacking composure under pressure, which hindered her ability to fully convey her message. She used the metaphor of "modern women as octopuses" to illustrate the multitasking abilities of people in today's society. "An octopus has eight tentacles, and I envision each tentacle as a role that modern women play, such as being a mother, wife, and dutiful daughter. In society, women can absolutely be leaders, innovators, and inspirations to others. Despite juggling multiple roles, they strive for harmony, fulfillment, and spreading positive energy," the runner-up explained.

She views the situation as a learning experience and hopes the public will be open-minded and positive. "I am not perfect, so I will continue to improve and strive for growth," she said.

Nguyen Minh Long, a representative of the organizing committee, considered runner-up Nguyen Linh Chi's answer quite brave, demonstrating her willingness to express her personal views and knowledge of the octopus, applying it to life. "I appreciated her opening statement. However, in the latter part, Linh Chi wasn't composed enough to defend her viewpoint," he said.

Some audience members questioned Linh Chi being awarded the 1st runner-up title despite her hesitant response. According to the organizers, the judges evaluate contestants throughout the competition, considering factors beyond the question and answer segment. "Linh Chi possesses a balance of beauty, skills, and effort, making her deserving of the runner-up title," a representative stated.

Responding to the same question, Phan Thu Hien (2nd runner-up) said: "If I were to become a sea creature, I'd choose to be coral. Coral isn't a swimming fish, but it's the foundation of life in the vast ocean, nurturing and protecting thousands of other creatures. I believe true beauty lies not in outward brilliance but in inner worth".

Nguyen Hoai Phuong Anh (crowned Miss Ocean Vietnam Global) answered: "I would choose to be a sea turtle, quiet and unassuming in the ocean. Sea turtles don't need to show off, yet they can cross oceans and overcome challenges without losing their gentle nature. I aspire to be like that, living deeply, with determination, ideals, and listening to my heart to pursue my dreams".

Chu Tan Van believes beauty pageants should prioritize training in public speaking and cultural values so that contestants' statements are inspirational, appropriate, insightful, and avoid unnecessary controversy.

Miss Ocean Vietnam Global 2025 is jointly organized by two entities. This is the second time the competition has been held, aiming to promote the beauty of Vietnamese coastal culture and tourism, raise awareness of marine environmental protection, and promote the image of Quang Ninh and Vietnam to the world.
