Claude Monet's vibrant garden

Claude Monet spent his final years in a French countryside home, surrounded by a diverse garden of trees, flowers, and a water lily pond.

Claude Monet's former home is filled with flowers, plants, and trees.

In 1883, Claude Monet moved from Paris to Giverny with Alice, his second wife, and their children, including her children from a previous marriage. They initially rented a house. Seven years later, he purchased the house and transformed the empty land within.

Images and videos of artist Claude Monet's garden have garnered attention on social media. The house is located in the village of Giverny, in the Normandy region of France, about 80 km northwest of Paris.

The artist's first garden, Clos Normand, is located in front of the house. It features a variety of annual flowers and perennials, ranging from fruit trees like cherry and plum to daffodils, lavender, and roses. These are arranged in layers of varying heights, creating a space overflowing with color.

Inspired by Japanese postcards and gardens, Monet created a second garden in 1893. This garden includes a water lily pond and an arched bridge. During the last 30 years of his life, he created around 250 works on the theme of Water Lilies (Nympheas), many of which were sold in England and the US.

Monet planted various trees around the pond, including azaleas, Japanese apple trees, and cherry trees. The current bridge is a restored version of Monet's original oak design.

The artist once said he observed the pond in every season and at different times of day to understand the changing nature of the water under the influence of light, passing clouds, wind, and impending rain.

During his lifetime, Monet was an avid collector of Japanese prints. From the 19th century, Japonisme significantly influenced Western art, particularly Impressionist artists.

In November 2023, Monet's Water Lily Pond sold for 74 million USD at Christie's New York, making it one of his most notable works on the water lily theme. The painting had not been exhibited or appeared on the market for approximately 100 years.

The colorful array of flowers in the artist's garden is depicted in The Artist's Garden at Giverny. Monet painted this oil-on-canvas piece in 1900.

Born in Paris, France in 1840, Monet was the second child in a merchant family. In his youth, he drew caricatures before becoming a student of the renowned painter Eugene Boudin. He was a pioneering artist and founder of French Impressionism. During his 86 years, Monet created 2,000 paintings, many of which were made in his garden. However, Monet's life was marked by sorrow. In 1912, he developed cataracts but continued to paint. He died in 1926 from lung cancer.
