Gen Z actors star in 'Mua do'

Do Nhat Hoang, 28, and Nguyen Hung, 26, portray soldiers fighting in the ancient citadel of Quang Tri in the film "Mua do" (Red Rain).

Teaser for "Mua do", a highly anticipated revolutionary film this year, slated for release on 22/8. The film crew began production last year on a 50-hectare set along the Thach Han River. The film features numerous large-scale scenes, depicting the ferocity of the war.

Lam Thanh Nha portrays Binh, a soldier with hidden depths and struggles. The 30-year-old actor grew up in a difficult family situation in Tien Giang. After graduating from the Academy of Post and Telecommunications, he worked as a lookbook model and took on extra roles. Last year, he landed his first film role in "Cai gia cua hanh phuc" (The Price of Happiness).

The cast was selected from over 1,000 individuals through casting calls in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Before filming, they underwent training in martial arts, military conduct, and combat skills.

The central characters are the young soldiers of Squad 1. Do Nhat Hoang plays Cuong, a patriotic intellectual with lofty ideals. He represents the students who "laid down their pens to take up arms."

The Nha Trang native, standing at 1.8 m tall, was formerly a dancer. Before "Mua do," he gained attention for his role as Phuc in the film "Ngay xua co mot chuyen tinh" (Once Upon a Time, There Was a Love Story).

Sen, played by Hoang Long, is the tough and battle-hardened member of Squad 1. The actor, from the Hanoi Drama Theater, was praised by the director for his expressiveness and physicality.

Nguyen Hung, who plays Hai, is a singer in the band Maydays. Their song "Phep mau" (Magic) has 42 million views on YouTube. He participated in "Dan ca go" (Wooden Fish), which won Best Short Film at the Golden Kite Awards 2024.

Nguyen Hung composed and performed "Con gi dep hon" (What Could Be More Beautiful), a song inspired by the film.

Steven Nguyen plays Quang, a soldier of the Saigon government. The character has several intense confrontations with the soldiers of Squad 1.

Ta, the Squad 1 leader, is played by Phuong Nam. The character serves as the older brother and pillar of the squad. In the trailer, his character has the line: "Our squad includes members from the North, Central, and South; the whole country is in this fight." Before filming, he had to lose weight to fit the character's appearance.

Phuong Nam, 32, has acted in films like "Cau Vang" (Golden Boy) and "Tieu doi hoa hong" (Rose Squad), and TV series like "Nha minh la lam" (Our Strange Family), "Tinh trang: Da ly hon" (Status: Divorced), and "Doi dieu tra so 7" (Investigation Team 7).

Tran Gia Huy plays Tan, an optimistic and naive character. Facing loss and suffering on the battlefield for the first time, he breaks down but remains committed to his ideals.

The actor has played supporting roles in series like "Nhung chang duong bui bam" (Dusty Roads), "Khong thoi gian" (No Time), and "Tinh trang: Da ly hon" (Status: Divorced).

Dinh Khang plays Tu, a sensitive and romantic young student. The 25-year-old, from Binh Dinh, has appeared in "Tet o lang dia nguc" (Tet in Hell Village), the high school drama "Nu sinh" (Schoolgirl), "Hoc duong noi loan" (Rebellious School), and the music video for "Chang the giu lay chang danh buong tay" (Can't Hold On, Can't Let Go) by Ngo Kien Huy. Before acting, he trained and competed in Taekwondo for 10 years.

Ha Anh (right) plays a ferrywoman named Hong. During filming, the actress was often moved, thinking of her grandfather, a martyr in Quang Tri.

The 30-year-old is a model and has participated in singing game shows and TV series.

Model Luong Gia Huy plays Hoang. He has acting experience in films like "Vien dan cuoi cung" (The Last Bullet), "Nu chu" (The Female Lead), and "Mat troi mua dong" (Winter Sun).

"Mua do," written by Chu Lai, depicts events from the 40th day of the 81-day battle of Quang Tri. During filming, the crew consulted with historians, cultural experts, and veterans.
