George Clooney's film receives high praise at Venice film festival

Jay Kelly, starring George Clooney and Adam Sandler, received a 10-minute standing ovation at the 2025 Venice Film Festival.

The film, competing for the Golden Lion – the festival's top prize – had its world premiere on the evening of 28/8 (morning of 29/8 Hanoi time). Directed by Noah Baumbach, Jay Kelly follows the eponymous veteran actor, played by George Clooney, and his manager Ron, played by Adam Sandler, as they journey across Europe. Along the way, they confront life-altering decisions and relationships that impact their careers.

Critics have praised the performances of the two lead actors. Many journalists at Venice noted Clooney's seasoned portrayal, while Sandler surprised viewers with a more restrained and nuanced performance than his previous roles. Their on-screen chemistry highlights the value of friendship while revealing the hidden side of the entertainment industry.

Film blogger Jairo Jimenez commented: "The film is a brilliant tragicomedy, blending existential philosophy. Clooney's performance is captivating, portraying a character grappling with the pressures of fame. Sandler delivers a surprisingly emotional performance. An intimate work by Noah Baumbach".

The Telegraph called the film a masterpiece about mid-life crises, with a memorable ending. The Hollywood Reporter noted the film's humorous and humane moments, focusing on the complex relationship between the star and his manager. However, the Guardian felt the film didn't fully explore Jay Kelly's character, leaving the narrative somewhat lacking.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Clooney described the role as his most honest performance. "At my age, roles like these are rare. If you can't accept aging, it's better to leave the screen. I choose to face and embrace it, both in film and in life," he said.

Before the screening, Clooney and Sandler signed autographs and posed for photos with fans on the red carpet. The 64-year-old star wore a suit, while Sandler wore a tuxedo. After the screening, Clooney embraced his co-star and kissed his wife, Amal Clooney, to the cheers of the audience.

Director Noah Baumbach is a familiar face at the Venice Film Festival, with previous films including De Palma (2015), Marriage Story (2019), and White Noise (2022). Clooney has also attended the event to promote Out of Sight (1998), Good Night, and Good Luck (2005), and Wolfs (2024). This was Sandler's first premiere at the festival.

George Clooney, born in 1961, is known for films such as Out Of Sight, Ocean's Eleven, Up In The Air, Gravity, and The Midnight Sky. He has won three Golden Globe Awards for his acting and two Oscars – one for his role in Syriana and one as a producer of Argo. Beyond his work, Clooney is also recognized for his sense of style.

He married lawyer Amal Clooney in Italy in 9/2014. They live with their 6-year-old twins – a boy and a girl – in a $14 million villa in Berkshire, England. In 2021, the actor bought a house in France, just a few minutes' drive from Brad Pitt's estate.
