Golden opportunity: a night of art reflecting Vietnam's transformation

Through epic poems and songs, the art and political commentary event "Golden Opportunity" recalled many milestones in the nation's history.

The event took place at three locations: the Hanoi Flag Tower, Ngo Mon (Hue), and Nha Rong Wharf (Ho Chi Minh City), attracting thousands of spectators. For nearly two hours, the program revisited important milestones, most notably the August Revolution, followed by the "resolute struggle" at the 1954 Geneva Conference, the Tet Offensive in spring 1968, and the signing of the Paris Peace Accords in 1973. On the Ngo Mon stage, artists reenacted the atmosphere of the uprising with music from the songs "Marching South" (composer Hoang Van Thai) and "Together We Go, Red Soldiers" (composer Dinh Nhu). Photo: Ngoc Thanh.

The opening chapter, titled "Look broadly, think carefully", drew inspiration from President Ho Chi Minh's poem "Learning to Play Chess": "Look broadly, think carefully/ Resolutely continue the offensive/ In a lost game, two rooks are wasted/ In time, one pawn can succeed".

Using mapping technology and live-action performances, the production team recreated the setting of Vietnam in the 1940s, when French forces in Indochina were weakening and Japanese troops invaded. After a series of events sparked conflict between Japan and France, the Vietnamese people seized the opportunity to establish revolutionary organizations, issuing an uprising order on 13/8.

Singer My Linh performed "Hanoi Autumn". The song by composer Vu Thanh evokes the autumn days of 1945: "As if in a daze, listening to the wind blow/ Echoing in Ba Dinh/ His words that autumn, the color of the flag that autumn, still here, blue sky and clouds". Photo courtesy of the organizers.

The program also featured many songs about the country in peacetime. Singer Ha Anh Tuan performed "My House Has a Flag" (composed by DTAP), paying tribute to the generations who sacrificed for independence. Photo courtesy of the organizers.

Artists reenacted the strength of Phu Dong, the legendary youth hero, to the lively music of "Upward Bound" (composer Luu Huu Phuoc).

Following the performance, intelligence Colonel Tu Cang, Hero of the People's Armed Forces, appeared in a documentary film, recalling the call of the Youth Vanguard: "You have only one class, the class of youth. You have only one task, the task of youth. You have only one goal, national liberation. O youth, the Youth Vanguard awaits you."

Poet Nguyen Khoa Diem appeared on stage in Hue, reading his poem "Land and Water". The work, part of the epic poem "Thirsty Road", was written in 1971 at the Binh Tri Thien battlefield. The poem praises the beauty of Vietnamese culture, history, and people, thereby encouraging the spirit of fighting to protect the country during the years of resistance against America.

The program concluded with the song "Spring Zither" (composer Cao Viet Bach), performed by Ngu Cung, carrying a message of a bright future. The stages at all three locations were ablaze with fireworks at the finale. Photo: Ngoc Thanh.

The joy of national reunification was celebrated in the performance of "Spring in Ho Chi Minh City" by composer Xuan Hong.

After the performance, artists from the Hanoi Drama Theater performed an excerpt from the play "Me and Us" (written by Luu Quang Vu), which discusses the renewal of production and nation-building in peacetime.
