Le Hoang, the director of the book street, reported that from the beginning of the year until now, the book street has sold over 339,000 books, a nearly 2% decrease compared to 2024. Children's books accounted for almost 4 billion VND, a decline of nearly 13%. According to the company, sales of children's books have been continuously declining since 2023.
"Without changes in product development and enhanced engagement with young readers, the children's book segment will continue to decline, thus losing its foundational role in fostering a reading culture for future generations," a company representative stated during a review meeting on the morning of 18/7 at Nguyen Van Binh book street.
According to the company, several factors have contributed to the decline in children's book sales. In addition to having more entertainment and learning options from digital platforms, the children's book market lacks outstanding works with investment in content and presentation that would attract both children and parents. "Ultimately, economic pressures may lead to reduced spending on this book segment or a shift to other formats like e-books and shared reading," Le Hoang assessed.

Traditional purchases (directly at the book street) have stagnated, while online sales channels have grown. The company representative believes that without a strategy to retain on-site readers, in the long run, the book street will struggle to maintain its identity and its position as a cultural reading symbol of Ho Chi Minh City. Publishing and distribution units need to leverage their strengths in organizing interactive activities, enhancing engagement, and strengthening the connection between readers and book stalls.
For the last six months of the year, the book street plans to expand its collaboration with clubs and young artist groups to create small stages and outdoor classes, thereby strengthening the role of children's books. The company will propose that book stalls proactively create "exclusive on-site experiences" that online channels cannot replicate, such as meet-and-greets, book signings, interactive reading sessions, and limited workshops. The company will also focus on major events, including a series of activities to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day on 2/9.
