The role of Aunt Ba marks Hong Anh's return to the cinema after two years since "Dat Rung Phuong Nam." The character is partly inspired by the actress herself. In real life, she is often called "Anh Huong" by acquaintances, and has a humorous and playful personality, a departure from the often-suffering characters she typically portrays.
In addition to comedic scenes, the artist has some emotionally charged moments, such as a monologue delivered by Aunt Ba through tears to her sister. Nguyen Thanh Binh (also known as Binh Bong Bot), the film's screenwriter and executive producer, said that for this scene, Hong Anh had to cry through seven takes, adjusting her emotions each time as directed.
Hong Anh, 48, began her career as a dancer. At 18, she was chosen by director Le Cung Bac to play Bach Van, the younger sister of Bach Cuc (played by Viet Trinh) in the television series "Nguoi Dep Tay Do." She continued acting in television series like "Nhung Neo Duong Phu Sa" and "Cau Thang Toi." In 2000, she won the Best Supporting Actress award at the 45th Asia-Pacific Film Festival. In 2004, she played her first historical role as Kieu Nguyet Nga in the film "Luc Van Tien."
In recent years, she has appeared in commercially successful films like "Blood Moon Party" (directed by Quang Dung, which earned 180 billion VND). As a director, she made her mark with "The Island of Inhabitants," which won three major awards at the 2017 ASEAN Film Festival. Hong Anh has also performed on renowned stages in Ho Chi Minh City like Idecaf and Hoang Thai Thanh in plays such as "12 Ba Mu," "Ngay Xua Ngay Xua," and "Nua Doi Huong Phan."
"Crashing the Party: Mom's Birthday" is a black comedy centered around an urban family burdened by the pressure to succeed. A crisis unfolds during the mother's birthday, revealing long-hidden conflicts and resentments among family members. The film carries a message: Don't wait until it's too late to truly understand your mother.
The film also stars Ai Nhu, Thanh Hoi, Huu Chau, Tran Kim Hai, Tin Nguyen, and Samuel An, and is scheduled to premiere on 12/9, commemorating the Vu Lan season.
