According to HK01, Jin Yong's (1924-2018) novel *The Smiling, Proud Wanderer* is being adapted by TVB for a new version. The production company has not yet announced a filming schedule. Tsang Chi Wai, the studio's general manager, said they will invite some actors from the 1996 version – a popular adaptation among Asian fans – to participate. Many hope Lu Tung Hien, the lead actor from the 1996 version, will return to the *wuxia* genre.

Critics and audiences largely agree that the 1996 production is the most successful of the 10 television adaptations of Jin Yong's novel. While not conventionally handsome, Lu Tung Hien captured Linghu Chong's world-weary essence. According to Mtime, when the series first aired, Jin Yong remarked, "He has the eyes and expressions of Linghu Chong." In a poll on VnExpress, Lu Tung Hien's performance received the most votes, surpassing versions portrayed by Li Yapeng, Chow Yun-Fat, and Wallace Huo.
Sanlian Lifeweek notes that after 30 years, Lu Tung Hien's Linghu Chong has stood the test of time, becoming a definitive on-screen portrayal. The actor brought to life the character's rebellious spirit, yearning for freedom, honesty, and loyalty. Lu Tung Hien's portrayal is considered the closest to the original novel while still bearing his personal touch.

In Lu Tung Hien's view, Linghu Chong differs from other heroes and great swordsmen in Jin Yong's works. He is free-spirited, enjoys wine and meat, is infatuated with gambling, and even competes with beggars for alcohol. While righteous, Linghu Chong isn't the admired hero type like Qiao Feng, but rather a romantic wanderer.
Unlike many of Jin Yong's other works, *The Smiling, Proud Wanderer* lacks a specific historical setting. The novel's central theme is the conflict between good and evil, and the masks people wear, critiquing excessive ambition.
Lu Tung Hien believes anyone can relate to the character's experiences. "Everyone has simple dreams of family and a fulfilling career. But as Linghu Chong matures, he realizes life isn't a fairy tale. His master turns out to be a hypocrite. Those he thought were kind are revealed to be malicious, while those seemingly ill-intentioned actually help him," Lu Tung Hien said.

The martial arts director initially wanted to choreograph fixed movements for Lu Tung Hien to showcase in each action scene. However, Lu Tung Hien insisted that Linghu Chong wasn't a great swordsman, but someone who wanted to be ordinary. Therefore, the character's fighting style is improvisational. After a duel, he casually plunges his sword into the ground with nonchalance.
The actor developed the character with a realistic approach, incorporating flaws, strengths, and weaknesses. Lu Tung Hien found the portrayal easy because he felt Linghu Chong shared many of his personality traits. The actor stated that in real life, whether facing pressure or sadness, he chooses to be true to himself. He doesn't chase money or fame, living life on his own terms. He considers difficulties as "passing clouds and wind, nothing major."

Many viewers debate whether Linghu Chong loved his junior sister or Ren Yingying more. According to Lu Tung Hien, the series answers this question. When Linghu Chong sees Ren Yingying's true face, he is moved and kisses her gently. The actor said, "That's a man's desire for the woman he loves. He never felt such desire for his junior sister or Yi Lin."

During filming in 1995, the actor worked daily from 6 a.m. to 2 a.m. the next day. He had almost no rest, needing to wake up early for makeup before 6 a.m. The actor once suffered a facial injury requiring three stitches. After a week off, he returned to the set with the wound still healing, requiring makeup artists to apply medical gauze to his face. The actor remarked, "Image editing technology wasn't like it is now. It's a memento of that era of filmmaking."
The actor didn't expect the role to resonate with so many viewers. While diving in the Philippines, he was surprised and delighted to see a surfboard printed with his Linghu Chong image.
Now 59, the actor regularly plays supporting roles in television series and also runs a vegetarian restaurant. Lu Tung Hien is multi-talented and passionate about diving, riding motorcycles, and racing. He has been with his partner, Mak King Ting, for 31 years. The couple, who have chosen not to have children, often travel the world.
