On 16/9, the phrase "fingernails in martial arts dramas" became a trending topic on Weibo, attracting numerous comments. The buzz originated from the appearance of martial arts expert Tieu Thu Thuy (played by Thanh Nghi) in the historical drama. In several scenes, the actor wears pink clothing and makeup to match.
Some viewers argue that while clothing choices, makeup, and nail color are personal decisions in real life, in a martial arts drama, the production team should respect the story's setting, theme, and spirit.
"Pho son hai," adapted from Wen Rui An's novel "Shenzhou Qixia," revolves around Tieu Minh Minh, a young man captivated by martial arts novels who imagines himself as the wandering swordsman Tieu Thu Thuy. Initially inexperienced and unskilled in martial arts, Tieu Thu Thuy receives guidance from masters, eventually becoming a renowned hero.
Thousands of comments deem Tieu Thu Thuy's appearance inconsistent with the traditional image of a martial arts hero. User Tangtang wrote, "I don't think a swordsman should be so heavily made up. It clashes with the harsh world of martial arts. The filmmakers have the right to express their vision, but they should preserve the core elements of the genre. Instead of focusing on lipstick, eyeshadow, and nail polish, they should concentrate on the character's fighting techniques and stances."
Others believe Thanh Nghi's appearance isn't problematic, arguing that the pink nails signify good health and vitality. Unlike the main character, supporting actors like Truong Tri Lam and Lu Tong Hien have darker, more rugged appearances in "Pho son hai."

Directed by Nham Hai Dao and Lam Phong, the drama also features rising stars of Chinese cinema like Co Luc Na Trat, Dong Mong Thuc, and Tran Ngoc Ky.
Born in 1990, Thanh Nghi entered the film industry at 21 and gained recognition for his roles in "My nhan thien ha," "Tram vun huong phai," "Thanh Van Chi 2," "Luu ly my nhan sat," "Truong An Nac," "Lien hoa lau," and "Du quan ca."
